What is an MPA?
A Marine Protected Area or MPA are defined zones of the sea where natural populations are protected in some way from detrimental human activities. Finding Sanctuary’s MPAs will provide an environment in which marine species can thrive and regenerate and in turn can benefit all user groups, including fishermen, anglers, divers and visitors to the South West.

Protection can range from the exclusion of one or more activities, or the complete removal of all exploitative activities
to create a Highly Protected Marine Reserve or HPMR.

Our aim is to balance the need to provide a high level of protection in core areas, with reducing the most damaging activities at other sites.

This project has the protection and recovery of marine biodiversity as its primary objective and will aim to provide an environment in which all species can thrive.
