Finding Sanctuary will gather large amounts of information from a wide range of sources which will be developed into a comprehensive GIS database showing, for example different seabed types or areas which are important to fishermen and anglers.
The MPA network will encompass the whole sea area, from the high water mark to the farthest point of UK jurisdiction and will include examples of all different types of marine habitats from rocky reefs to muddy creeks.
The location, size and shape of each MPA will be planned during the project with guidance and close involvement from those who use the seas for their livelihoods and enjoyment.
It is essential that all interest groups in the South West are closely involved in the planning process. With regular meetings and the use of local knowledge the development of the network will be very much a shared process.
Raising awareness of the state of the coasts and seas in the South West is also an important part of Finding Sanctuary. Our message will reinforce the connections between people and the sea, and how it is possible to use and enjoy the marine environment, whilst ensuring space and a sustainable future for wildlife.
