what is Finding Sanctuary?
Finding Sanctuary is a partnership project that aims to create a network of Marine Protected Areas around the coasts and seas of South West England.
We can only really glimpse life and times under the sea. However, our duty of care and protection must extend beyond those creatures that we see in our daily lives. We have a responsibility to protect habitats and sea life for their intrinsic value as well as for the inheritance that we are passing on to future generations.

Unlike the food we grow on land, fish and shellfish are some of the last wild resources that we still eat. They rely entirely on the health of the ocean habitats and the food webs around them and our management and care must extend beyond fish stocks to encompass the whole marine environment.

The sea is not just a source of fish and seafood. Our coastlines and seas are a source of inspiration, wonder, mystery, excitement and relaxation and attract many thousands of people every year.

It is very hard for us to visualise and accept the degree of damage that mobile fishing gear has had on seabed habitats and marine life around the UK. As the marine environment declines over the years, our perception of what a normal or healthy population should look like is lowered with each passing generation.

The South West beaches and coastline are a huge attraction for thousands of people from within and outside the region. Activities like surfing, diving, sea kayaking and coastal walking are surging in popularity. The stewardship of this fantastic resource should be a general responsibility of all to ensure that its future is safeguarded.
